Still Life Painting Advice

Still Life Painting Advice

One of the best gifts my father has ever given me was a few pictures from his still life painting series. He is a great artist, but he never really pursued it as a career. Instead, he goes in phases where he spends a lot of time painting, and other times, he doesn’t do much at all. He has entered his work in some local contests, and has done very well, but other than that, his painting is something that he does for himself. Given the chance, I think he might sell some of them, but I don’t think he really gives it much thought.

He has told me that he has never been able to do faces very well, and that is why most of what he does is still life painting. He did a series of close up flowers a few years ago, and gave them out to each of his children as gifts at Christmas time. For the longest time he would not give us any, but when we assured him that we really did like them, he seemed to take pleasure in giving each of us the still life painting that we liked the most.

Some people don’t bother with art because they think something like a still life painting would cost them too much money. That’s not really true. There are many great artists out there that have not been discovered, or like my dad, don’t really seem to be too concerned with it. They sell their paintings for a great price and it’s not often hard to find something amazing if you look around and see what your local painters have to offer at art shows and the like.

If you know of a still life painting that you love, but you know you can’t afford the real thing, or the real thing is not for sale, some place offer prints of these. They have permission to do so, and though they are not often real paintings, they certainly look almost as good when framed and hung on the wall. Many famous still live paintings that are still popular a hundred or so years later are now offered in prints when the originals hang in museums. You may not be able to go out and see it every day, but there is no reason you can’t enjoy it in your home if you find a print at a very reasonable price.
