my body measurements don't match any of the configurations on sewing pattern size charts. How do I get close?
for instance, they give as an example of a size 14 skirt waist 28 hips 38. My measurements are 34.5 and 38.5. This is from a AA pattern, what's the dif with AA etc...? HELP!!
This works for me when making pants or a slim skirt - go by the hip measurement when choosing a pattern.
With the size 14 pattern, you will still have to expand the waist and expand the hip just slightly.
It is easier to round your measurements up to a whole number.
Before cutting out the pattern, make the new cutting lines with a red sharpie (put newspaper under the pattern to protect your working surface).
Mark each seam at the hip 1/8" larger, tapering down toward the knee.
Taper out from the hip seams toward the waist to the new marks you have made from the following adjustment:
Subtract the waist pattern size from your waist measurement and divide by the number cut pieces to be sewn.
If you have one center, two sides and one back seams:
Center (2) + Sides (4) and Back (2) = 8.
Divide the difference in the waist measurment (35 - 28 = 7)
by 8 and you will have to add slightly less than 1" to each pattern seam at the waist.
This will give you a better fit in the seat.
Using a larger size pattern makes for a baggy butt.

Make a "muslin" first before cutting into the fashion fabric. You can use actual muslin fabric, an old sheet or really cheap fabric.
