Is there a way to make Acrylic Yarn less stiff?

I was testing a pattern for a fabulous beret with acrylic yarn, and I'm really happy with the end product! (which is surprising because I always jack up the gauge and wind up with baby hats) ANYWAY, it's super super stiff, is there anyway to soften it so that it sits more relaxed as most berets do..

I use a lot of acrylic yarns and there are many that are not stiff when they are worked up. Caron's Simply soft is a great yarn with a lot of drape, so are a lot of baby yarns and sport weight yarns. You can pretty well tell if a yarn will be stiff just by handling it and folding the yarn between your fingers. The darker the yarn the stiffer because it takes harsher chemicals to dye them dark which in turn makes the yarn stiffer and that is rarely changed no matter how often it is washed.
I make a lot of shawls, stoles, chemo hats and other things that need to be soft for the cancer patients. Any time you choose a yarn, whether natural material or acrylic, handle it, pet it and rub it against your cheek. Those simple things will tell you a lot about it before you work it up and find out how unpleasant it might be. Nearly all of the things I make are made with acrylic so the person can just toss them in the waher and dryer without having to worry about felting,or other problems and they know they will stand up and usually get softer the more they are washed.
I really don't get what you mean when you say you jack up the gauge and wind up with baby hats. Do you mean that you use a different type or ply of yarn then called for and so the gauge is off? Do you use different sized needles that effect the gauge? Sometimes just those things can effect the way yarn feels because by tightening up the gauge it makes the fabric stiffer, no matter what kind of yarn it is.
