Useful Perennials For Gardening , The Achillea

A great many people now completely appreciate that a gorgeous well kept garden can add a great deal of extra cash worth to their house. Not only that, a well designed yard can greatly increase the amount of useable space for your family and you. Because of these factors, and some others besides, Landscape Gardening has, over the years, increased to become an extremely popular hobby. Top of the list for nearly all gardeners is a wonderful annual display of colorful and varied flowers.

While many garden designers opt to add color by using annuals, others conclude that using Perennials is the best method. Annual flowers are those plants which germinate, develop, bloom and die in only the single year whereas Perennials will continue to bloom year upon year. Of course there are advantages and disadvantages for both annuals and Perennials and Landscape Gardening is all about choosing the the most suitable blend of the two.

A large number of people experience emotional remembrances of long gone days spent in a grandmother’s garden enjoying the gorgeous aromas of many old fashioned favorite Perennials. Unfortunately it can be rather difficult for even the most keen gardener (including some seasoned professionals) to emulate old fashioned gardens because many of the varieties (of species) can no longer be purchased. You will be happy to hear that many of the older varieties have been replaced by strains which are more resistant to disease, so you can often discover suitable replacements which have little or no (other) differences to the older plant.

Old Fashioned Perennial Plants

One of the most popular Perennials used in Landscaping today is the Yarrow which was first used in American gardens during colonial days when it was brought over from Europe. Achillea is a very old fashioned plant used since the days of the Greek hero Achilles (from whom the plant gets it’s name) who used it to help heal his soldiers. Achillea is able to stop bleeding and works amazingly well at healing wounds.

Yarrow has beautiful flattish groups of small flowers that are rather like daisies. Achillea come with flower heads in a variety of colors ranging from various shades of pinks, yellows and whites. Yarrow are considered by most landscape gardeners to be considerably easy Perennials to cultivate. They are so simple to propagate because they are rather invasive plants which can be seen growing on the poorest of soil. If you want to witness success with Yarrow you only need to avoid growing in boggy or poorly drained soil. The plants are fantastic at tolerating drought conditions. Achillea ptarmica and Achillea millefolium are two of the more popular varieties but there are various others available.
