Roses: Sure Fire Tips & Advice
Taking proper care of your roses can seem like a very challenging, and time consuming thing to do, but the results of such tender care more than make up for it. Remember, roses are said to be one of most challenging flowers to grow and keep healthy; however, all good things need high maintenance.
There are so many little tasks that have to be carried out to keep your roses looking their best, but all of those small tasks can add up to one quite big one.
Here are some excellents bits of advice for the regular maintenance of your roses.
1. You should always sharpen your hand shears before clipping.
2. You should prune your roses in the early spring. Or at the very least once the others start budding because the buds will eventually become new branches later.
3. You should clip the dead and damaged branches first. Next, you should cut back all but five of the leftover healthy branches. They should finish up at about as thick as a pencil.
4. Prune the bushes by about one third to one half, depending on how tall you want them. Clip above the outward facing buds, which is the buds that are on the outside of the rose bush because this will help the bud to grow upward; which will make the center of the bud open up for better shape and air circulation.
5. You should clip the climbing roses with great care. The branches have a susceptibility to overlap and you wouldn’t want to clip the wrong branches.
6. Mulching is necessary because it helps to keep theupkeep down a little. Mulching requires your roses to require a lot less watering, weeding and also helps reduce the risk of diseases. The best mulches are organic ones such as grass clippings, wood chips and pine needles.
7. Keep the area around your roses clear to prevent them from getting locked in an area that doesn’t give enough circulation.
8. Protect your roses during the winter months by adding a few additional inches of soil to the base of your roses. This will help provide the extra needed heat in the winter.
9. You should avoid using the white plastic cones when carrying out your winter protection as they can trap too much heat during the winter thaw. They are also very unattractive.
10. You should feed your roses water often, but lightly during the growing season. When you water your roses, avoid directly watering the foliage as it may cause fungal diseases. You should water the roses at the base.
