Great Reasons to Grow Your Plants in a Container Garden

Container gardening has so many benefits, it’s hard to believe more people aren’t doing it.

Container gardening is a great way to make the most of the limited space you have. Lots of people have houses or apartments with limited yard space. But with container gardening, they can enjoy plants virtually anywhere from their porch to inside their homes.

Think of the possibilities of having a container garden in your kitchen or an extra bedroom. Others utilize a closet space to grow plants by using a grow light.

You’ll also find that container gardening brings with it the benefit of being able to easily move your plants. If there is bad weather coming, it makes it simple to bring outdoor plants inside so they will be out of the elements. Also, if you find that there is too much sun on your plants or not enough, you can easily move them to a location that works better. And you can easily move containers around if you think they’ll look better somewhere else.

Plants grown in containers don’t have the same issues with diseases that traditionally-grown plants have. Although some container-grown plants do get diseases, it is far less likely than it would be if those plants were grown directly in the soil. Potting soil is generally free of disease-causing organisms, so your plants will be safer.

Keeping your plants well-fed is also easier when they’re grown in containers. It’s much easier to ensure the fertilizer you use gets to your plants if they’re confined to a small area of soil. When you fertilize plants that are growing directly in the soil, the fertilizer may drain away or be absorbed by other nearby plants. This is not as likely when plants are grown in containers.

You do have to remember that because there is less soil, the fertilizer may drain out much faster. So you need to remember that the frequency of fertilizing will be increased as opposed to what you would do in a landscape. But on the plus side, plants will be able to use more of the fertilizer you apply because it is less likely to wash away.

When you grow your plants in containers, you’ll also be able to extend their growing season. By carefully insulating pots by wrapping them in blankets or other insulating materials, you can keep their soil warmer than the ground soil. You can start your plants early indoors or in a cold frame, then you can easily move them to larger pots outdoors when the time is right.

The right use of insulation can allow you to keep growing your plants outside even after the first frost. Also, you can easily bring the plants inside if it gets too cold for them to be outside, even if they are well insulated.

Of course one great benefit of using container gardens is that it makes gardening easy and accessible for everyone. People who are dealing with disabilities often find that it is much easier to go with a container garden, since they can put the plants where they can get to them easily. Those who are in wheelchairs often find that putting their plants on low tables makes it easier to get to them. Even those who are elderly, who find it hard to work in a traditional garden, can enjoy container gardening.

Even children find container gardening to be much easier than traditional gardening, because they don’t have to weed, rake and hoe, and they don’t have to have an adult till the soil for them.

So, if you don’t have room to grow your own traditional garden, you can still easily grow the garden you want when you go with a container garden.
